About Us

Directional Mining & Drilling Ltd. was launched 20 years ago during the infancy of directional drilling. Incorporated in 1990 in British Columbia, we are one of the oldest, continuously operating directional drilling companies in Canada and are still under the same management as we were when our doors opened 20 years ago. We have done extensive work in British Columbia and Alberta, as well as branching into the US with our subsidiary company Directional Mining & Drilling LLC where we have completed projects in numerous states.

Since our beginnings, we have gained a wealth of experience. We have completed drilling in a variety of ground conditions such as sands, gravels, solid granite, clay etc. We started out with one 10,000 lb. rig and now have eight drilling rigs of various sizes, the largest being 550,000 lbs. In conjunction with our drilling operations, DM&D employees are fully trained in fusing of HDPE. DM&D owns its own fusing equipment for pipe from 1" to 42" in diameter and have fused pipe up to 48" diameter. Recently we began affiliations with MT Horizontal Boring Ltd . and now proudly offer Auger Boring, Pipe Jacking, Tunneling and Pipe Ramming to our list of services provided.

The Environment

Environmental Responsibility

Environmental Responsibility can be broken down into two distinct parts: – Emissions and Environmental Impact.

Emissions

With growing concern for the environment being at the forefront of many people’s mind, managing our business in an environmentally friendly way is of the upmost importance. In the past few years the catch-phrase "Carbon Footprint" has been heard with increasing regularity. This term refers to the total greenhouse gas omissions caused by an organization, project or product. When you look at the carbon footprint of Directional Drilling vs. Open Cut methods for installation of pipe, conduit or cable the difference is extraordinary. In many cases the carbon output can be 80-90% less when utilizing HDD. Municipalities all over North America are beginning to make this a part of their bidding requirements as "Carbon Credits" become more and more important.

DM&D decided to investigate into what we could do to help reduce our emissions and our “Carbon Footprint”. This decision brought us to becoming a member of Climate Smart Business . Our affiliation with Climate Smart led us to map our total greenhouse gas emissions, calculate our carbon footprint, and implement a plan to reduce our emissions and carbon footprint over the next few years.

We are striving to promote our industry to municipalities, companies and corporations as a more environmentally friend way of installing needed infrastructures (telephone, cable. fiber optics, water, sanitary and sewer lines) then the current "open cut and place" methods still being used and as such are working hard to show that as a company we are as “"green"” as we promote our services to be.

Environmental Impact

As mentioned, HDD is by nature much less impactful to the surrounding environment then other installation methods. However, we can further reduce that impact by implementing preventive and protective measures . This is done by developing specific environment plans prior to the beginning of each project and addressing elements such as:

We believe in planning ahead and taking a pro-active approach. Everything we do as an individual and more importantly as a business has an impact on the environment and it is our responsibility to minimize that impact for something as important as the environment we all must share.

Health and Safety

Management of Directional Mining & Drilling Ltd. strive to provide a healthy and safe workplace for our employees. We recognize and acknowledge that the success of our organization lies in the health and well-being of our people. We understand our responsibilitites as established by WorkSafe BC, and endeavor to meet or exceed these.

DM&D has been able to achieve this goal through a functional occupational health and safety program and through the coordinated actions of the employer, supervisors, workers and the health and safety committee. Our Supervisors are the key to the success of the health and safety program at the workplace level. Supervisors learn, understand and follow their responsibilities under requirements established by WorkSafe BC and in turn instruct workers, enforce the Program and maintain a safe workplace.

Our employees receive continuous training in areas such as First Aid, Confined Spaces, WHMIS, etc. Tailgate meetings are held regularly to ensure employees are aware of the job specific hazards they may encounter on each site, coordinate activities with any other contractors and review all emergency and safe work procedures.

The personal health and safety of each employee of DM&D is of primary importance and prevention is given priority over operating productivity where necessary. Our objective is to maintain a program that will reduce the number of injuries and illnesses, not merely in keeping with industry standards, but surpassing them. DM&D's goal is zero accidents and injuries.

Having been in business for 20 years, DM&D has an extensive portfolio of projects completed. From simple 15m road crossings to shots as long as 800m; ground conditions from sands, silts and clays, to granite; 1" service lines to 48" storm drains; product pipe of HDPE, PVC, Fusible PVC and Steel; DM&D has experience in it all. Waterfront and Howe

Howe Street and Waterfront Project

This project was located in a busy underground parkcade located at the cruise ship terminal in downtown Vancouver. Project scope was installation of a 18" carrier with 4 - 4" ducts insides. While only a short shot (90m), a steep entry and exit angle, SkyTrain rail lines, and support pillars made for a tricky drillpath. The height limitations in the parkcade also made for a very tight working site. Delivery of the equipment required carefully planning and measuring to ensure everything would make it safely down the entrance ramp to the site location.

The parkcade was kept open and running during drilling operations. During staging for pullback of the product pipe it was placed on top of stacked shoring cages to keep the road open for continued access of the delivery trucks to the loading bays.

This project was an exploratory drill located in the heart of downtown Vancouver. The site was a popluar park surrounded by high rise resident buildings on three side. In order to minimze public impact the site was limited to the area of the park which sloped up to the sidewalk. Actual active park land was not disturbed in any way.

Due to the extremely tight project site, DM&D customized it's drill in order to fit it into the area and utilized a crane to mobilize it into position.

DM&D was required to drill and install a 16" Sanitary Forcemain (850m total) and manholes from the long-term parking area to the Airports new office building at the terminal. This required the drill to be set up along the New Canada line and for the pipe to be staged in runs underneath the terminal. Room was extremely limited and the pipe string was fused into 6 sections and then fused on the fly during pullback.

BC Hydro hired DM&D to drill a 580m 36" borehole underneath the Thompson River for the installation of 4 _ 4" and 4 _ 8" un-banded duct bundles. The entry site was set up in the Weyerhaeuser Yard amongst the piles of timber. Work was in close proximity to existing Hydro lines and all employees were required to attend the PSSP training.

The duct bundles were installed in a single pullback. A 24"steel casing approximately 10' long was constructed to protect the bundles from damage from collapsing soils behind the reamer.

Exit side was into a park area and was extremely limited in size. We had to ensure the numerous walking trails were kept opened so as not to be an inconvenience to the local residents whom used them.

This drilling project took place inside the Kidd Station Hydro PLant. A very tight setup location and was needed for this project. A 600m - 34" bore was completed under the north arm of the Fraser River. 4 _ 8" HDPE pipes were bundled and pulled back.

DELTA SANITARY SEWER FORCEMAIN TWINNING

Location: Delta, BC - Along side Burns Bog

Pipe Size: 5000m of 24", 30" and 32" DR17 HDPE Pipe

Conditions: Peat, Clay and Boiling Sands

An upgrade of the old sanitary sewer system was set during the construction of the new South Perimeter Road. Drilling was in an environmentally sensitive area. The borepath ran parallel to the irrigation ditches for the farms, with a section running underneath the cranberry fields.

Location: David Lam Park, Vancouver

Conductor: 60" casing for 100'

Pipe Size: No Pipe - 42" Push Ream for Exploratory Drill Only

Conditions: Till into bedrock (sandstone)

This project was located in a densely populated are in downtown Vancouver. Location was in a park which had an elementary school located on the far corner (The children utilized the Park during recess and lunch hours). High rise resident buildings surround the park on 3 sides with the fourth side running along the sea walk along False Creek

Location: Waterfront & Howe Street, Vancouver

Pipe Size: 18" HDPE Carrier pipe with 8 _ 4" ducts (HDPE) pulled through.

Conditions: Fill into bedrock

This project was located in an underground parkcade which had to be kept open during the drilling and pullback stages. The parkcade was located along the Waterfront and cruise ship terminal. Drilling was underneath rail and Sky Train tracks.

Conditions: Sands and Silts with small gravels

This project was completed in an environmentally sensitive area. The exit side was situated in a Park where the public still had access to. Entry was located in the Weyerhaeuser Yard, set up amongst the log piles.

Location: Sunset Beach, Vancouver

Conductor: Entry - 60" casing for 60' and Exit - 54" casing for 200'

Conditions: Fills, Tills and Bedrock (sandstone/silts)

Set in a highly populated urban setting. Entry and exit were both located in the middle of public parks located along the seawall in downtown Vancouver.

Location: McMahon Gas Plant, Taylor, BC

Pipe Size: Slip-lining a 16" high pressure water line with a 14" HDPE Pipe for 450m plus 4 new

28" HDPE Pipes for cooling water lines slip-lined inside of existing 30" lines.

Conditions: Slip-lining existing lines.

Work took place inside the Gas Plant and Safety was of the upmost importance!

DISTRICT OF MAPLE RIDGE

Location: Maple Ridge, BC

Pipe Size: 800m of 42"ID - 48"OD HDPE Pipe

Conditions: Silty Sands and Clay

This entailed an on-grade storm line which had to empty into a fish bearing creek. The end of the line was sheet piled during installation and the end was dug out and rip rap place from end to creek. The creek was also lowered to match grade. The drilling took place in a residential area, with a school along the drill path. Line also had to run underneath a highway.

Completed 20+ crossings of 2" and 4" HDPE duct bundles for communications lines under Highway 1. Work was completed during night shifts. DM&D employees had to complete the Kiewit Flatiron Safety Orientation.
